Busy as a Bee

Help! I can't stop canning!

Well after I went to the chiropractor yesterday morning I took a turn around the garden and realized that the harvest was upon me:) I picked 8lbs of tomatoes and made 3 quarts of soup and froze that.

Then I went out and picked 10lbs of grapes and made that into grape juice.

I decided that I hate grapes. I never want to do them again. It took me the whole day to wash them, pick them off the stems, mash them, strain them and then can them. Ugh! I don't think that it can be worth all that work. I pulled the jars out at 10:20pm!

One of my neighbors had said I could take apples from her tree if I wanted so I decided I would try and make apple sauce today. I went back there to pick some and realized I didn't really want to use those apples. They weren't very good, but I already had in my head that I was going to do this, so I went to a farm-stand and got a whole pot of cortland apples for $6. I enjoyed doing the applesauce and it tastes really good.

I was going to make apple dumplings for dinner tonight but poor Ricky didn't get home until quarter of eight tonight. He was doing a stream crossing and couldn't leave until they were all the way across the stream.

Tuesday night I made my mom's pizza dough but with whole wheat flour and used my homemade tomato sauce to make "little" pizzas for us.

I thought they tasted really good but Ricky was wishing for stuffed crust. And for some reason whenever I make that dough it never rises for me!? Wierd.

Do you farm out your little ones while you do all that work? Unbelievable how much you get done. No one can say you are a slacker. Good for you.

Amy, you have to think "positively" about doing grapes! The juice is so good I will go to all sorts of work just to make it! If you think that is bad, what about grape jelly? I do that too. All just to give away!!

You sure keep busy. I enjoy making applesauce, but I haven't tried canning anything yet. Maybe one of these years . . . or the next time Grandma is out for a visit!

Hey Amy, I'm just wondering why you canned your applesauce instead of freezing it. I haven't canned mine in years. I think it is quicker. You just make it and then put it in containers - no time for the cooking.
