Elk County, 2013

Last Friday morning we packed up all of our things and headed over the the beautiful Elk County, PA.  Chad and Sheila followed us to Parker Dam State Park, stopping for lunch on the way up.  Keith and Ronda met us up there about an hour after we had arrived.  We got ourselves unpacked and the tents set up and had a little dinner around a fire and then went over to the viewing area to see if we could view some elk.  And there just so happened to be a herd of cows out grazing.
It's such a beautiful area.
baby Ethan thought he would try and catch an elk.
the babies:
what would one of my posts be without pictures of flowers??
I adore the wildflower "Queen Ann's Lace"
After we watched them for a little while we went to our favorite little spot up there and got apple dumplings, ice cream and coffee.  The hummingbirds were buzzing all around us but I could not get a good picture of them :(
That night we sat around the camp fire for a while before it started raining and chased us into our tents.  It poured the rest of the night and into Saturday morning.  Like, really poured!  Ricky and I had rain dripping on our heads most of the night and poor Keith and Ronda had not waterproofed their tent and were sleeping in a puddle all night!  It was pretty yucky still in the morning but we managed to get breakfast in before heading out to the visitor center.  As soon as we left camp and started driving the sun came out and it started to look better.  We got to the visitor center and were greeted by some cows grazing:
we attempted to get a group picture in front of the elk statue, I believe there's some kids missing out of this :P
I with we would have seen a bull like for real!
The visitor center is huge and there's lots of things to look at and do there.  I enjoyed watching this goldfinch flitting around the wildflowers and eating seeds:
on the way out:

I pretty much failed at taking pictures the rest of the time.  We got back from the visitor center and worked on drying out our campsite the rest of the day.  We didn't go out to look for elk the rest of the weekend.  I think we went for a little hike Saturday afternoon with everyone.  Sunday morning after breakfast Ronda and I took the kids down to the park and watched them play until lunch.  After lunch we all packed up and headed home.  Chase found this awesome caterpillar in the woods while they were exploring.  I'm not exactly sure what kind it is but it's either a swallowtail butterfly or a big moth :P
I put it in a mason jar when we got home and it's went into it's chrysalis already!

On the way home we ended up getting a flat tire on our trailer.  Ricky and I were out on the side of the highway changing it for an hour and got back in the car to find our lovely girls had drawn all over themselves with pen!
I guess I should be glad they didn't draw on the car seats of something :/
