Weekend at Pine Knot

We had gone up to Pine not at the end of May and enjoyed it so much we wanted to try again in the summer.  We went this past weekend starting Friday, July 24th.  I was so thrilled to see all the wildflowers in bloom!

on a little hike with Katy :)

Chase and Ricky had fun catching a bunch of these native brook trout in the creek next to the cabin.  It's a spring fed mountain creek and is always VERY cold!

Joanna had taken her hamster up with us (shh, don't tell on us, haha!)

The cabin got pretty comfortable to sleep at night. It was a little warm in the late afternoon but would cool down at night so we could sleep.
more wildflowers:

The kids love playing all the games that are in the cabin.
Saturday morning we discovered so many really neat moths on the side of the cabin. This one looks just like a leaf!
Cute pink and yellow guys:

After breakfast Saturday morning Ricky drove the girls and I up to the top of the mountain to pick 5 cups of wild blueberries.

5 cups doesn't sound like a lot but those wild blueberries are tiny and it probably took us an hour!

washing and sorting took some time too.
Joanna is turning into quiet the artist!

After we were finished with the blueberries I took the girls down the road to play in a different part of the creek and I picked some wild raspberries that were growing alongside the road. the boys had gone fishing at the lake.

Katy decided to help me and we were able to pick a lot faster.
Partway through our picking Katy saw a snake close to her feet and from her description of it afterwards we think it was a rattlesnake! So scary, i'm so thankful she didn't get bit by it!
In the afternoon on Saturday we all swam together at the lake and it was very refreshing and fun.  We then went and got dinner at Couch's restaurant which has amazing food and beautiful views. really pretty views on the drive back the cabin too:
Sunday morning we had blueberry pancakes for breakfast and then headed back over to the lake for some kayaking, fishing and more swimming.

I got bit by a horsefly and my hand swelled up like crazy in reaction to it!
We cleaned up the cabin and left around 1pm and got home at 3 Sunday afternoon... it's so nice that the cabin is only 2 hours away!
Monday morning I turned all our berry picking into jam.
The raspberry jam was just gorgeous.

6 half pints of blueberry spice jam and 6 half pints of raspberry.  Will be so nice to have this winter and think about the fun summer weekend we had at the cabin. Of course I had to make some rolls so we could test the jams out :)
